A Gift That Strengthens the Church: Our Gratitude for the 200 Reformation Study Bibles from Ligonier Ministries

There are moments in ministry when God’s provision arrives so clearly, so specifically, that it becomes impossible not to pause and give thanks. Receiving 200 copies of the Reformation Study Bible from Ligonier Ministries was one of those moments for us at Evangelical Leadership Institute Asia. What came to us as boxes of books quickly became something far deeper—an expression of gospel partnership, a strengthening of the hands of pastors and workers, and a reminder that the global Church stands together in the work of equipping the saints.

When we first learned that Ligonier Ministries was sending these study Bibles, we were humbled. We knew the value of these resources. We knew how rare it is for many Filipino pastors to own a study Bible of this depth and quality. But we also knew that God was doing something more than simply providing tools—He was knitting together believers across continents for the sake of His Word.

A Gift That Reaches Far Beyond Metro Manila

Once the Bibles arrived, we immediately began distributing them across our training sites. ELI Asia currently serves pastors and ministry workers in multiple regions, and we wanted these resources to reach as many faithful servants as possible. The Bibles were sent to Bulacan – two campuses, Pampanga – two campuses, Laguna – four campuses, Metro Manila – one campus, North Cotabato (Mindanao) – one campus.

Seeing these Bibles travel from city to city, province to province, and even across the sea to Mindanao reminded me of how the gospel itself spreads—carried by willing hands, received with joy, and planted in places where God is already at work.

In each of these locations, the response was the same: overwhelming gratitude. Many of the pastors who received them have served faithfully for years, even decades, without access to formal theological training. Some have relied on worn-out Bibles, photocopied notes, or borrowed commentaries. For them, receiving a Reformation Study Bible was not just receiving a book—it was receiving a companion for ministry, a well of wisdom, and a tool that will shape their preaching and teaching for years to come.

Faces That Tell the Story

Our Baliwag campus recently completed New Testament Survey 2, where students explored the Book of Colossians and learned that the health of the church rises or falls on its Christology. The central question was simple yet profound: Who do we believe Jesus truly is?

In a time when many teachings reduce Christ to a mere teacher, helper, or prophet, our students wrestled with Paul’s insistence that Christ is the eternal Son of God, supreme over all, and fully sufficient for salvation. They also studied how false teaching—subtle, persuasive, and often cloaked in spiritual language—threatens the church today just as it did in the first century.

For many of our Baliwag students, this is the first time they have access to a study Bible that explains the text with such clarity and depth. As they prepare to begin New Testament Survey 3, they now have a tool that will walk with them through every passage they encounter.

In our San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan campus, students are taking a more advanced doctrinal subject: Humanity and Sin. This course shapes how they understand human nature, the depth of sin, the meaning of salvation, and the Christian life. It also touches on sensitive and timely issues such as sexuality, death, the intermediate state, and the final resurrection.

During their recent discussions on the Constitution of Man, students were reminded of who we are before God—created in His image, yet fallen and in need of redemption. They also engaged with a timely report on the Church’s response to same-sex marriage, grounding their reflections in Scripture.

For students wrestling with difficult questions about human identity, sin, and holiness, this study Bible becomes a steady companion—one that keeps them anchored in the truth.

Our campuses in Pampanga and Siniloan, Laguna, are currently or have recently taken up Old Testament Survey 3, which covers the prophetic books and the later writings of the Old Testament. These books can be challenging even for seasoned pastors—filled with historical details, poetic imagery, and prophetic warnings that require careful interpretation.

The Reformation Study Bible is especially helpful here because its book introductions give students the historical and cultural background needed to understand the prophets. Its explanatory notes clarify difficult passages and prophetic imagery. Its theological themes help students see how the Old Testament points forward to Christ.

For many of our students, this is the first time they have a resource that helps them navigate the prophets with confidence. Instead of feeling intimidated by these books, they are now able to appreciate their richness and relevance for the church today.

ELI Asia was also able to hold the Tribal Leadership Training for Tribal Pastors in Mindanao last April 7, 2026—a gathering that reminded me once again why this ministry matters so deeply. The pastors who attended came from the Subanen tribes of Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga del Sur, and the Manobo tribes of Upi (Maguindanao) and Esperanza (Sultan Kudarat). Many of them serve in remote, hard‑to‑reach communities where theological resources are scarce, and ministry training is difficult to access.

What made this gathering even more meaningful was the way God provided for every need. We also provided training manuals and ministry materials so that no pastor had to carry a financial burden to attend.

And as of April 9, we rejoice even more as copies of the Reformation Study Bible—graciously given by Ligonier Ministries—have finally reached our tribal pastors in Mindanao. These Bibles are now being distributed to ELI Asia students across the region. For pastors who rarely have access to solid study tools, this gift will profoundly strengthen their preaching, teaching, and personal study.

Why This Gift Matters So Deeply

At ELI Asia, our mission has always been clear: to equip pastors, church planters, and ministry workers for faithful, Bible-centered service. We exist because thousands of Filipino pastors serve without access to formal theological education, often due to financial limitations or geographic barriers. They preach, teach, counsel, and lead with sincerity and dedication, but many long for deeper training and better tools.

We do our best to provide that training through modular classes, mentoring, and accessible theological education. But we also know that training alone is not enough. Pastors need resources they can return to week after week, year after year. They need tools that help them understand Scripture more clearly, preach more faithfully, and shepherd more wisely.

This is why the Reformation Study Bible is such a precious gift. It is not merely a reference book; it is a theological companion. It helps pastors interpret Scripture with greater clarity, understand historical and doctrinal contexts, prepare sermons with deeper insight, disciple their congregations with confidence, and grow personally in their love for God’s Word.

Your generosity has strengthened not only their learning but also their ministries. And because these pastors serve congregations across the Philippines, your gift will bear fruit in churches, families, and communities far beyond what any of us can see today.

Looking Ahead With Gratitude

We do not take this lightly. We know that these Bibles will shape sermons, guide counseling sessions, deepen discipleship, and enrich personal study. We know that they will be opened in small churches, in rural barangays, in urban communities, and in places where the gospel is still taking root. And we know that God will use them to build up His Church.

From all of us at ELI Asia, thank you for standing with us. Thank you for believing in the importance of equipping pastors. Your gift is making an eternal impact.
