The Training of Leaders for the Planting of Churches and Their Development

Not everyone is called to plant a church, and not everyone is meant to be a part of a church plant

Let me ask you a question, one that most people hardly ever think about in their time as a professing believer in Christ. Have you ever considered how churches are established? Have you ever considered what it takes to build sound, biblical churches? Most people probably never thought about these things, and many times, most people only want to go to church as a regular attendee or member.

Though some genuinely want to worship the Lord and grow in faith, knowledge, and wisdom when they come to church, some people think along the lines of “What can this church do for me? What can the church offer to keep me? Seldom does a person come to a newly planted church with a conviction or a heart attitude of, “In which areas can I help to support the work of the Lord in this church? ”

That’s why it’s important to consider our reasons for choosing a church to become a part of. Some people are designed to understand and meet the needs of a newly planted church, and some are meant to be a part of an already established church. Because church planting is a lot of hard work, not everyone is entrusted with such a task. Yes, you read that right! Not everyone is called to plant a church.

Church planters deal with problems that can have a serious impact on their efforts to build and grow churches. A single article won’t be enough to sum up all the difficulties that a church planter goes through. From a lack of sufficient financial resources, discouragement, a shortage of trained leaders and volunteers, and persecution inside and outside the church, leaders unfortunately labor in isolation.

Although planting churches is a great, worthwhile task, there are some major challenges to overcome, and in order for church planters to endure in their mission to do the Lord’s ministry, these problems must be addressed through proper training and mentoring.

Training and Development

The value of educating pastors for church planting and their development cannot be overstated. The Philippines, being one of the most religious countries in Southeast Asia, with a largely Christian population, has an increasing need for thriving, Bible-based churches.

To build a church, we need to know a lot about theology, be able to lead, and have a thorough awareness of the people we want to serve. As a result, training church planters and leaders has become an intricate process that is frequently supported by denominational training programs, local seminaries, Bible schools, and mission organizations.

These educational institutions seek to offer thorough instruction that strikes a balance between theological soundness, biblical literacy, and useful ministry skills. In order to prepare future leaders to successfully manage congregations and divide the Word of truth, special emphasis is placed on courses on hermeneutics, pastoral care, church administration, evangelism, and discipleship. Partnerships between foreign missionaries and local church networks often assist these initiatives with internship models, mentorship, and exposure to field ministry.

In addition to academic education, character development, servant leadership, and a healthy prayer life must be prioritized. These are seen as critical characteristics for resilience and long-term ministry success, especially in regions characterized by various factors that include social marginalization, spiritual opposition, or poverty.

Though we must also acknowledge that there are challenges that educational institutions and theological seminaries may not be able to prepare church planters for, because we are imperfect beings and are prone to sin. There are challenges that church planters learn on the ground and in the field that could break them and cause them to give up. But through prayer and reliance on God, church planters can overcome. However, it is always better to have proper training and development than none at all.

Training programs aim to develop God-fearing and transformative leaders who are not just knowledgeable but who can mentor others, cultivate spiritual maturity, and spark church development movements. Continuous theological education, ongoing pastoral support, and a dedication that attends to spiritual needs are essential for the long-term growth of established churches.

As the church grows, investing in local leadership development is still a crucial way to make sure that the gospel is properly preached and that churches are not just founded but flourish. Training church leaders is an essential and hopeful ministry that continues to have an influence on many lives and communities, supported by prayer, resources, and a vision for biblical churches.

The unity and theological soundness of the church are strengthened through leadership training. It offers a uniform structure that enables churches to function in harmony while removing theological confusion or destructive practices. It becomes even more crucial as the church grows to make sure its leaders are devoted to sound teaching and have a solid understanding of Scripture. In the end, supporting the training of leaders is an investment in the church’s future. It guarantees the true preaching of the gospel, the integrity of the planting of new churches, and the development of already existing churches.

ELI Asia: Developing Leaders for the Local Church

Evangelical Leadership Institute Asia (ELI Asia) is one of these educational institutions that raise men and women who are sound in doctrine and plant churches that are rooted in God’s word. The support they get from their partners in ministry helps in developing biblical ministers, church planters, and lay leaders in the local churches. It enables the staff to provide materials and produce modules. It makes it possible for the teachers to teach online and to record videos of lessons.

Since one of the challenges pastors and lay leaders face is a lack of proper theological training, ELI Asia is designed to bring this training to local churches. It seeks to enable Christian leaders to acquire theological and ministerial education equivalent to that offered in Bible colleges without leaving their churches for a long time. The goal of the program is to train Christian leaders and workers for ministry while in ministry without having to leave their secular or full-time Christian vocations.

The ELI Asia Leadership Programs are designed in such a way that face-to-face lectures, classroom discussions, and independent readings and research are integrated. If your church is seeking to equip your pastors and lay leaders biblically, you may prayerfully consider partnering with ELI Asia.

We give all the glory and praise to God as ELI Asia continues to grow. We pray to be kept by God in heart, in mind, in strength, and in spirit. We pray to be kept faithful in doing His work and to seek Christ in all our ways.
